Halifax Phase I Community,
Nicely, our neighbors, the Bauers, let me know that there is a 3.5-4ft alligator enjoying the creek in their backyard. Gina said, “It likes to sun on the weir next to the powerline area”. (This is the channel area hugging Kiowa Lane and adjacent to the Tano powerlines).
So, although alligators are shy and rarely a threat to humans, it is timely to review some basic information and “nice to knows”, especially when it comes to pets.
- Prevent your dog from fighting with an alligator by keeping your pet on a leash. Also, keep your pet away from the water’s edge.
- Interestingly, cats are feared by alligators because they move fast.
- Other advice:
Never handle an alligator, even a small one because alligator bites can result in serious infection.
Never feed an alligator. Trouble happens when an alligator associates people with a food source.
To scare off an alligator, make a lot of noise before an attack begins.
If an alligator is a few yards away, back away slowly.
BTW: Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn
Importantly, if any alligator is under four feet away in a swimming pool or porch>call Nuisance Alligator hotline @866-FWC-Gator or 866-392-4286.
We live in a special area adjacent to the Bulow Creek State Park. It is good to be aware & respectful of our “wildlife neighbors”.
By doing so, we enjoy them and take care of ourselves and our pets!!
Respectfully, Laine Keltner
